Introduction

A capacitor is a device that stores electrical energy in an electric field. The effect of a capacitor is known as Capacitance. A capacitor has terminals connected to two metal plates separated by a non-conducting material. Also, the capacitor passes alternating current rather than direct current.

Energy Storage- A capacitor is a passive electronic component that tends to store, filter, and regulate electrical energy. A capacitor also has the property of conducting alternating current and blocking voltage levels of direct current.

Simple Operating Principle- The simple and effective operating principle of a capacitor is that it has two parallel metallic plates, which are separated by a dielectric material, which is non-conductive. Positive and negative charges get collected on separate plates. The plate on which the electron gets collected develops a negative charge. Whereas a positive charge is developed on the other plate. Now both the plates try to come closer to each other because of the opposite charges, but the dielectric material keeps them separate. Therefore, an electric field is created, and the capacitor stores the charge.

Charging And Discharging- The capacitor has the tendency to get charged within seconds and also get discharged quickly. Also, capacitors can hold their charge for a long period of time without large residual decay.

Types And Sizes-  The operating voltage and the number of load capacitors can decide the physical size of the capacitors. Capacitors are available in various sizes and shapes. Their size and shape also depend on the construction material used. A few commonly used types of capacitors are ceramic capacitors, film capacitors, electrolytic capacitors, supercapacitors, and variable capacitors.

Identification- The operating voltage and the number of load capacitors that can store are the two factors that can make consumers have a choice in types of capacitors. In some of the capacitors, working value is already written over it, whereas in some capacitors, numbers and colours are used to denote them.

Power Factor- Capacitors tend to compensate for the reactive power consumption of electric motors and transformers after producing reactive power. These results are seen as stable power grids along with increased transmission capacity.

Safety- The smaller the capacitor, the safer it is. Since it doesn’t have mixtures of highly flammable liquids, capacitors have the property to resist overheating during heavy charges or discharges.

Long Life- The maintenance-free capacitors can operate for around ten years without any service. Usually, capacitors are cheaper as compared to other electronic types of equipment.

Application Areas- There are various types of capacitors with different functions-

In DC blocking, a capacitor blocks the passage of direct current and allows the alternate current to pass.

Filter- Different types of filters are used in electronic circuits, of which capacitors are the main component.

Capacitors are used as charge units and discharge units for triggering, ignition, and as a power source.

The capacitor has the property of passing an AC signal and allowing it a couple of sections of an electronic circuit to another circuit.
